As part of Passkeys Week, which took place on November 17 – 21, 2025, FIDO Alliance hosted a live, interactive Ask Us Anything (AMA) session designed for developers, product managers, and anyone building—or buying—authentication products and services. Attendees were able to bring their questions about passkey implementation, UX, security, standards, and ecosystem adoption directly to the experts shaping the industry.

Attendees joined this webcast to hear from members of the FIDO Alliance’s UX Working Group explore the critical UX considerations in designing and deploying passkeys at scale, from initial user onboarding to seamless cross-device synchronization. 

Speakers from Google, Microsoft and HID discussed how to address the challenges of simplifying complex security concepts for everyday users, and gain valuable insights into the future of authentication. 

Speakers shared insights about the key UX decisions, user research findings, and design strategies that are shaping the adoption of passkeys, and how the FIDO Alliance is working to make online security both powerful and effortless.

Attendees joined this webcast to hear how FIDO Alliance standards and certification can support the automotive industry as it transitions toward software-defined vehicles, autonomous technologies, and connected services. This transition brings an unprecedented opportunity to innovate and capitalize on new business models (such as in-vehicle commerce and subscription services) but also introduces significant cybersecurity threats and user experience challenges. 

This session builded upon the FIDO Alliance’s recently published white paper, Addressing Cybersecurity Challenges in the Automotive Industry, exploring how the FIDO Alliance is uniquely positioned to address these challenges using passkeys, FIDO Device Onboard (FDO), and existing and future certification programs.

What is a passkey? A passkey is a FIDO authentication credential based on FIDO standards, that allows a user to sign in to apps and websites with the same process that they use to unlock their device (biometrics, PIN, or pattern). Passkeys are FIDO cryptographic credentials that are tied to a user’s account on a website or application. With passkeys, users no longer need to enter usernames and passwords or additional factors. Instead, a user approves a sign-in with the same process they use to unlock their device (for example, biometrics, PIN, pattern).

The FIDO Alliance hosted a webinar on September 24, 2024, with top digital identity experts to discuss the latest updates to the standard and what they mean for passkeys.

Megan Shamas, CMO of the FIDO Alliance, was joined by guests Ryan Galluzzo, Digital Identity Program lead of NIST NCCOE, Teresa Wu, co-chair of the FIDO Alliance Government Deployment Working Group and VP of Smart Credentials at IDEMIA. The panel unpacked the latest changes to the draft and shared what it means for passkeys.

Webinar attendees also had an opportunity to get questions answered before the public comment submission deadline next month. NIST requests that all comments be submitted by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on October 7, 2024.

FIDO security keys have been deemed the “gold standard” for multi-factor authentication. With this in mind, the FIDO Alliance published user experience guidelines earlier this year to help online service providers design a better, more consistent user experience for the consumer security key audience and ultimately maximize adoption. FIDO Alliance standards were created from the outset with a “privacy by design” approach and are a strong fit for GDPR compliance. And when it comes to biometrics, FIDO standards prevent this information from being stored and matched in servers – it never leaves the user’s device – and FIDO(R) Certified devices do not allow for any biometric data to be captured.
